BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Central defender Carlos Izquierdoz netted his second goal in as many matches as Boca Juniors clinched their first win of the Argentine Professional League Cup season with a 1-0 victory at Newell's Old Boys on Sunday.
Izquierdoz timed his leap at the far post to perfection to send a powerful header past goalkeeper Alan Aguerre in the 71st minute following an Edwin Cardona corner.
It was no less than Boca deserved in a match in which the Buenos Aires giants had six shots on target compared to the hosts' two.
The result at Estadio Marcelo Bielsa in Rosario left Boca fourth in the 13-team Group B standings, two points behind leaders Lanus.
Newell's slid to 12th, having lost both of their first two fixtures.
In other matches on Sunday, Independiente won 1-0 at Patronato, Platense prevailed 1-0 away to Argentinos Juniors, and Velez Sarsfield won 2-1 at Sarmiento.
On Saturday, River Plate also secured their first win of the new season with a 3-0 rout of Rosario Central in Buenos Aires.
