TUGUEGARAO CITY, March 2, 2021 (PIA) -- The Cagayan Valley region is set to receive 5,312 doses of the Sinovac vaccine for COVID-19 by next week as relayed by DOH Director for Region 2 Dr. Rio Magpantay in an online interview with PIA Region 2.

According to Magpantay, the said vaccines are intended for frontline workers, who are one of the first on the government's priority list for vaccination.

The initial target recipients will be coming from five primary hospitals in the region namely the Cagayan Valley Medical Center in Tuguegarao City, the Southern Isabela Medical Center in Santiago CIty, the Region 2 Trauma and Medical Center in Bayombong, the Tuguegarao City People's General Hospital, and the Batanes General Hospital. Also included are the PNP hospitals since law enforcers at the forefront are also at high risk in contracting COVID-19.

Magpantay explained that the number of vaccines allotted for Region 2 was originally set to 15,000 doses. However, the postponement of the arrival of AstraZeneca's vaccines resulted in the adjustment of the rollout.

After the initial 5,312 doses intended for the six identified hospitals, more are expected to arrive to fully cover the 95 hospitals identified in the region.

According to the regional director, the number of initial doses was based on the fact that the Cagayan Valley is nearing a low risk status when compared to other regions in the country. Places in Region 2 where there were formerly high numbers of cases now experience a downtrend.

On the other hand, the DOH official reminded vaccine recipients to cast away their doubts on the upcoming SInovac vaccines.

"Ang mahalaga [ay] makapagsimula na tayo. Kung ano ang nandirito, ay di iyon ang ating ibibigay kasi hindi naman ia-approve ng FDA 'yan kung hindi naman sila talaga tatalab sa atin," Magpantay said.

"We have to be very thankful [na] meron na tayong bakunang darating. At yung mga initial recipients nito ay dapat ding mag-isip, kasi ang iba ay ayaw talaga nilang tanggapin yung Sinovac. Subalit, dapat mag-isip din naman sila kasi itong nandirito ngayon ay sigurado naman tayo [na] makakapagbigay ng proteksyon," he added.

Magpantay reminded that despite Region 2's improvement with regard to the pandemic, people should still always follow the minimum health standards any time anywhere, to lower the risk of infection. (JKC/PIA2)
