BUENOS AIRES, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Sergio Barreto struck late as Independiente rose to third in Argentina's Primera Division Group B standings with a 1-0 home win over Defensa y Justicia on Sunday.
Barreto broke the deadlock in the 77th minute for the hosts by powering in a header after an Andres Roa corner.
The result ended a run of three matches without a victory for Independiente and left them third in the 13-team standings with 16 points from 10 matches, six points behind Velez Sarsfield. Defensa y Justicia is seventh, four points further back.
In Group A, Racing Club's title hopes faded with a 2-1 defeat away to a revitalized Arsenal Sarandi.
Jonathan Candia and Gaston Suso netted early on for Arsenal before Tomas Chancalay pulled a goal back for the visitors just before halftime.
Racing is now fifth in the group, six points behind leaders Colon. Despite having won two consecutive matches, Arsenal remains last with eight points from 10 outings.
In other fixtures on Sunday, Godoy Cruz drew 2-2 at Colon and Gimnasia held Estudiantes to a goalless draw in La Plata.
