WTA roundup: Danielle Collins off to strong start in Palermo

Top-seeded Danielle Collins took down Germany's Katharina Gerlach 7-5, 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy.

The American Collins needed just 90 minutes as she won 74 percent of her first-serve points (23 of 31) and converted half of her 10 break-point opportunities to overcome Gerlach's five aces.

Two seeded players were upset during Tuesday's action. Italy's Lucia Bronzetti knocked out Bulgarian No. 5 seed Viktoriya Tomova 6-4, 6-1, and Olga Danilovic of Serbia outlasted Russian No. 8 seed Kamilla Rakhimova 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Other winners included No. 4 seed Shuai Zhang of China, No. 7 seed Astra Sharma of Australia, Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania, Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine and American Francesca Di Lorenzo.

BNP Paribas Poland Open

American Varvara Lepchenko needed three hours and eight minutes to defeat Marina Melnikova of Russia 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the first round in Gdynia, Poland.

Lepchenko hit four aces without committing a double fault and saved 13 of 18 break points on her way to the lengthy victory.

Another match in Gdynia neared three hours when Tamara Korpatsch of Germany upset No. 11 seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours, 59 minutes.

No. 3 seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, No. 6 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, No. 9 Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain, Poland's Katarzyna Kawa, Georgia's Ekaterine Gorgodze and Russia's Amina Anshba also advanced.
