BUENOS AIRES -- At least five people were killed and 35 others were affected Thursday when an apartment caught fire in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, local authorities and medical personnel confirmed.

The fire started at 5:45 a.m. local time in an apartment while the occupants slept, and then spread to the upper floor, forcing the evacuation and rescue of the people living in the 14-story building in the Recoleta neighborhood of northern Buenos Aires. (Argentina-Fire)

BERLIN -- Germany's government on Thursday declared the second stage of the country's national gas emergency plan, after Russian gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline were reduced to 40 percent of capacity.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate advanced a compromised gun bill in a 65-34 vote on Thursday.

DHAKA -- A total of 68 people have been killed in floods caused by heavy seasonal rains and an onrush of water in parts of Bangladesh, said a report of the country's Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services on Thursday.

Most victims were drowned but some died in snake bites and lightning in the flood-hit areas between May 17 to June 23 this year, said the authorities. (Bangladesh-Floods)
