ASUNCION, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Veteran manager Daniel Garnero has been named head coach of Paraguay's national team, the country's football association said on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old replaces fellow Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who was sacked last week after the team's poor start to South America's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Paraguayan football association announced the appointment in a series of social media posts, without revealing details of the contract.

Paraguay are currently sixth in the 10-team South American qualifying standings, having opened their campaign with a goalless home draw against Peru and a 1-0 away defeat to Venezuela earlier this month.

The team's next qualifiers will be an away clash with Argentina on October 12 and a home duel against Bolivia five days later.
