Platense beats River Plate on penalties to reach semifinals

BUENOS AIRES, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Platense progressed to the semifinals of Argentina's Primera Division Apertura tournament on Tuesday with a dramatic away victory over River Plate on penalties.

Platense took the lead at Estadio Monumental when Vicente Taborda's first-time effort from 12 yards rolled into the far corner after taking a deflection off goalkeeper Franco Armani.

The visitors looked poised for a 1-0 win but River striker Miguel Borja was brought down by Oscar Salomon in the last minute of the allotted stoppage time and teenager Franco Mastantuono slotted the resultant penalty to force a shootout.

Kevin Castano and Sebastian Driussi missed for River before Ignacio Schor converted the decisive spot kick as Platense prevailed 4-2 on penalties.

Platense's next opponent will be San Lorenzo while Independiente will meet Huracan in the other semifinal.
