Penarol edges toward Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay international forward David Terans struck late as Penarol secured a 1-0 home win over Racing Club in their Copa Libertadores round-of-16 first leg on Tuesday.

Terans put the Uruguayan side ahead in the 78th minute by nodding home from close range after Matias Arezo's headed pass.

The Argentine outfit controlled 54 percent of the total possession but failed to have a single shot on target against Penarol's compact defense.

Penarol now only needs to draw next Tuesday's return leg in Buenos Aires to advance to the competition's last eight.

In Tuesday's other Copa Libertadores round of 16 first leg matches, Fortaleza was held to a goalless home draw by Velez Sarsfield and Sao Paulo drew 0-0 at Atletico Nacional.
